Can Window Cleaning Products Damage Your Windows?
It’s important to use the right products to have your windows looking their absolute best. However, some products on the market can lead to damaging your windows.
In this post, our Robina window cleaning team share their insights into the best products for cleaning windows and how to prevent damage from improper cleaning products.

Can Windows Really Be Damaged By Cleaning Products?
In a word, yes.
What is the real cost of my window cleaning products? Even though glass may seem like a tough substance that should be able to withstand a bit of cleaning spray and a squeegee, there’s more to the picture.
Windows often have various types of protective coating. For instance, “low E glass” has a thin coating on the inside which keeps heat in during winter and out during summer. Other types of windows have no such coating and can be cleaned like regular glass would.
What Cleaning Products Are Safe for Low E Glass?
The protective film on low E glass is only on the interior side. So the exterior side of the window can be cleaned like regular glass would.
We recommend avoiding ammonia and alcohol based cleaners. Not because they cause damage, but because they leave behind annoying streaks that you simply can’t get out!
Vinegar, on the other hand, works like a charm.
When it comes to the side of your windows with the low E coating, we recommend you avoid razor blade edges and squeegees. These can strip away the coating or weaken it.
A wet cloth is the best option to go with. We love cleaning cloths designed specifically for windows. You’ll find these are made from a different fabric that can help ensure you get a streak free shine with minimal elbow grease!
Do I Need Any Cleaning Products for Self-Cleaning Windows?
It can be hard to wrap your head around the idea of self-cleaning windows that leave no streaks behind.
How is this possible?
It’s about the science behind the construction of such windows. And as such, it’s best not to use regular cleaning products on these self-cleaning windows as they can ruin the special coating your windows come with.
Self-cleaning windows are a layer of titanium dioxide coating them. It’s a white powdery substance applied in an ultra-thin layer and usually goes unnoticed.
This coating relies on it’s reactions to light and water to keep your windows clean all year round. As light hits the window, it reacts to the water in the air and breaks down any carbon based dirt particles that are stuck on your windows.
Since this coating is also water loving, it works wonders during a rainstorm. Unlike regular glass, rain water doesn’t just bead up. It coats the glass and acts like a squeegee washing away dirt particles that may be on there.
All in all, you get a streak-free shine left behind without lifting a finger!
